Q.
I have third season strawberry plants, the plants are flowering and the leaves are growing above the flowers. Should I trim the leaves so the flowers get more sunlight?
A.
- Have you seen bees around your strawberry plants?
- Having the bees pollinate the flowers is more important as once pollinated, the fruit will get bigger and eventually ripen.
- It pays not to remove too much foliage as this is the plants food source. Any lower leaves that are yellowing or brown can be removed, but would recommend leaving the rest of the plants foliage intact.
- Strawberry plants have a fruiting life of about three years, each year the fruit tends to get smaller.
- At the end of this season in autumn remove runners off the plants and replant them for next seasons fruit.
