My watermelon seedlings have collapsed, what is wrong?

  Auckland
  October

Q.

My first watermelon seeds sprouted, but bent and broke at about two inches tall. What am I doing wrong? They're inside a very warm room and are kept damp.

Karen Goddard

A.

Hi Karen, it sounds like damping off - a common problem when germinating seedlings. It can happen if the seed‑raising mix is too high in nitrogen or if the seedlings have been given a nitrogen‑rich liquid fertiliser. Keeping the mix too damp can also cause seedlings to collapse.

Warmth is helpful, but make sure the seedlings aren’t stretching and have plenty of light. Reduce watering and let the surface of the seed‑raising or potting mix dry out between waterings. If the seedlings are sitting in a tray or saucer of water, tip out any excess so the mix isn’t constantly wet.

Hope this helps,

Lianne.
