Should tulip bulbs be left in their pot after they have finished flowering?

Q.

I have tulip bulbs growing in pots - what do I do when they have finished flowering? Do the bulbs remain in the soil?

Lee Hancock

A.

Tulip bulbs can remain in pots once they have finished flowering. Let the foliage die down naturally and leave the foliage until it has completely browned off, as this is the bulbs food storage for next season.

  • Pots can be turned upside down once the foliage has died off so that they don't get watered and the mix stays dry until next season. Place them in a dry, sheltered spot such as under a potting bench or in the garage or garden shed.
  • Before the bulbs start to sprout again in early spring remove the bulbs from their pot, knock out the old potting mix and repot the tulips into a quality free draining potting mix such as Tui Bulb Mix.
  • Tulips are cool climate bulbs and to successfully flower the next season they require at least 8 weeks chilling. If the flowers appear on short stalks this is an indication they are not getting enough winter chilling.
  • If living in warmer regions place tulip bulbs in the fridge for 6-8 weeks in a paper bag before replanting for spring flowering.
  • Avoid storing bulbs with apples in the fridge as they release ethylene gas which inhibits flowering in bulbs.
