What are the easiest bulbs to grow?

Q.

I've never planted bulbs before. I'd like to dot some around my new orchard for spring. What are the easiest bulbs to grow for a first timer?

A.

The easiest spring bulbs to start with are daffodils and bluebells. Both tolerate growing under trees and quickly bulk up over time to cover larger areas. You can plant early mid and late flowering daffodils to get a continuous wave of colour.

  • A few suggestions on easy to grow daffodil varieties include Paper Whites, Jonquils, Soleil d'Or, Ice Follies and Erlicheer.
  • Naturalising bulbs is an easy way to establish bulbs so they multiply in an orchard situation; scatter the bulbs and plant them into the soil where they land.
  • To get the best results, plant the bulbs to a depth approximately twice the size of the bulbs diameter.
  • Before planting dig a handful of Tui Bulb Mix into each planting hole.
  • Apply Tui Sheep Pellets to the area after planting for healthy soil and improved plant growth.
  • Feed your bulbs with Tui Bulb Food to give them a boost as soon the first flowers appear, give another dressing when flowering has finished.
  • Leave the bulbs to die down naturally after they have finished flowering.

  • What are some good trees to plant along a fence line for privacy? We would like to be able to keep them under 8 foot in height, and something that's not too deep from the fence. They'll be north facing.

  • I saw mentioned BLUEBELLS where do you buy them from, I thought I had discovered them until I realised they were white onion bells

  • Hi Carole, oh that's a shame. Bluebells are available though. Check at your local garden centre or online here at Kings Plant Barn https://www.kings.co.nz/scilla-english-bluebells or NZ Bulbs. Happy planting ^Tui Team

  • Hi Liz, thanks for getting in touch. What part of the country do you live in? And do you prefer evergreen or deciduous? Feel free to email us back at info@tuiproducts.co.nz and we will suggest some options. Thanks ^Tui Team
