Q.
What is eating my young citrus tree leaves? I can’t find any bugs or trace of them but can see there is damage.

Without describing the damage that is being done, there are several insect pests that may be the culprits.
- It could be leaf roller caterpillar. These caterpillars chew leaves, then roll up in the leaves to form a cocoon. Squashing the leaves together is the best method of control if you see this.
- Another possibility is beetle damage. Beetles fly at night and are hard to spot unless you go out at night with a torch, they will fly towards the light. If the damage has a jagged edge on the leaves then it is likely to be beetle damage. These easiest to control in the soil as larvae before they become adults and start flying, talk to your local garden centre about a suitable control option, Diatomaceous Earth may work.
- Another possibility is slugs and snails, especially in spring, apply Tui Quash, it is the safest slug and snail bait to use around children and pets, the active ingredient is Iron EDTA complex which is toxic to slugs and snails.
