What crops can I plant for winter in North Otago?

Q.

Hi, I'm wondering if you could advise what vegetables would be suitable to grow from now through the winter time? We live in North Otago about 420m above sea level and so we normally do get snow fall once or twice a year that stays for a bit. Also what is a good crop to plant to put nutrients back into the soil in an area that is fallow? Many thanks for any assistance you are able to give. Nic.

A.

Now in your area you can plant spinach, winter lettuce, kale, cavolo nero, parsley, bok choy and spring onions. Replenish the soil before you put any plants in with organic matter like compost and Tui Sheep Pellets, especially if the ground has been used for summer and autumn crops.

To replenish your soil nutrients in areas you want to leave unplanted for now, sow green crops such as lupin or mustard. After winter simply dig them into the soil to add nutrients, ready for spring planting.

What crops can I plant for winter in North Otago? Comments

  • Is it better to plant garlic in a garden rather than in pots? I have planted them in pots for the last 2 years. The first year, nothing happened. In the 2nd year they were a little better.

  • I'm interested to hear what veges would be suitable for planting in raised gardens, in the Wanganui area - we live in a valley so get fine weather (with rain) but frosts...

  • Oooo, lovely frosty area, I would have had lots of lovely winter veg in too, especially parsnips which love the frost.

  • Hi Nic, Your question about what you can plant now in N. Otago, Outside in your area you could also plant garlic and shallots, both real easy to grow and the results very rewarding. It is perhaps just a tad on the early side for planting both but half mine were put in the ground earlier this week. Best of Luck, Tony Robinson.

  • Hi Joyce, garlic is happy growing in pots and containers. In a pot the size of a kitchen bucket you can plant about six cloves of garlic. Choose a pot or container with good drainage and position in a spot that receives full sun. Break up each bulb into cloves, it is these cloves which you plant NOT the whole bulb. Fill with Tui Vegetable Mix. Bury each clove finger depth at least 5cm below the mix (twice as deep as the length of the clove).
