What do you suggest for fast growing trees suitable for coastal areas to provide shade?

  Bay of Plenty

Q.

Hi, I'm looking for fast growing trees suitable for coastal area Bay of Plenty. Mostly to provide shade. Thanks.

Hi Michele, you don't say whether you have a height restriction or a preference for evergreen or deciduous. Look around your local areas and see what trees are doing well. Some planting suggestions for coastal regions are Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak), Banksia integrifolia (Coast Banksia), Acacia baileyana (Golden Wattle), Jacaranda (will need protection from wind), Cordyline, evergreen Magnolia, Metrosiderous (pohutukawa), Pittosporum eugenoides (lemonwood) or Pittosporum crassifolium, Crepe myrtle, Paulownia, Wineberry (Makomako), Garrya elliptica, Cupressocyparis. Ask at your local garden centre for their recommendations and also have a look around your local area of what grows well. Lianne.
