What has stripped my silverbeet?

  Otago
  July

Q.

Hi, suddenly my silverbeet was gone...no green left, just white stalks with jagged torn edges. What could be that hungry in a coastal south island region?

Alison Baker

A.

Hi Alison, I would say it will be hungry birds at this time of the year, try placing some wild bird seed away from your vegetable garden and hopefully they won't feed on your plants. It could also be wild rabbits, hedgehogs, and rats have been known to much on vegetables (but probably prefer fruit) if they are hungry enough. Have a look for signs such as droppings, that will give you a clue. Lianne, Tui Team.
