What is the optimal soil temp for planting potatoes?

  Canterbury
  October

Q.

Hi, what is the optimal soil temp for planting spuds?

Grant Dudley

A.

Hi Grant

The optimal soil temperature for all plants is above 10 degrees C and below 30 degrees C. Depending where you are in NZ, plant spuds from September on wards as the soils should have warmed sufficiently to plant by then. If you are in a frost prone area, wait until the frosts have passed. Sprout (or chit) your seed potatoes before planting inside in a sunny warm spot. Remove the weaker shoots and plant with 3-5 strong shoots on each seed.

Thanks, Tui Team
