What is wrong with my lemon tree in a pot? The leaves are very yellow.

  Auckland
  September

Q.

Hi there, my Lemon tree is 2 years old in pot, started to bud this season. Leaves look little yellow / wilted. No signs of pest on or under leaves or trunk. Any recommendations?

Nathan

Hi Nathan, your lemon tree looks like it needs fertiliser. Use a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Fruit, Citrus Tree & Shrub fertiliser for citrus in pots and containers, the blended citrus food is not recommended as it can burn if over applied and has no control mechanism where a controlled release fertiliser provides 6 months feeding and is specially formulated for growing plants in pots and containers. Tui Novatec Premium slow release fertiliser is also good for citrus in pots or the garden, it is high in nitrogen and in potassium for continued flowering and fruiting, and feeds for up to three months. Feed your citrus in early spring (September) and again in late summer (February). During the growing season your plant will benefit from liquid feeding, use Tui Tui Seaweed & Fish fertiliser every 2-4 weeks. I like to mulch around my citrus tree that is growing in a pot using Tui Mulch & Feed and also throw a few sheep pellets around the top to continue adding organic matter it the soil. Make sure your tree is watered regularly in the growing season, it could be every 2-3 days, depending upon the growing season, the mulch will help conserve soil moisture as well. Your tree will also benefit from a copper based spray in early spring to help prevent fungal disease such as verrucosis, the puckering of the leaves looks a little like verrucosis, this isn't a harmful fungal disease, it just reduces plant vigour and marks the fruit. Some people recommend Epsom Salts to correct yellowing leaves, but that is only supplying magnesium to the plant, the tree needs a complete feed with a balanced fertiliser. It is quite typical for leaves to yellow with the change in season, especially winter to spring. Lianne, Tui Team.
