What mulch do I need for my asparagus bed over winter?

  Canterbury
  April

Q.

Hi, we just brought a place with an established asparagus bed and I am wondering what sort of mulch do I buy to winter it down, I have pea straw.

A.

Hi Judy, once the asparagus fronds have browned they can be cut down and laid over the garden bed to keep the weeds at bay. You can add layers of compost, pea straw, barley straw, rotted hay, pine needles, well rotted animal manure, any organic matter that breaks down easily is suitable. Lianne.
