When is a good time to divide hyacinth bulbs?

  Wellington
  August

Q.

I'm starting to clear the garden and notice my hyacinth bulbs are in a nice large clump. They have been in the same place for some years. They have leaves now. Can I separate now or do I wait until after they flower again.

Ann

A.

  • Hyacinth flowers emerge as the foliage appears, wait until flowering has finished before dividing the clump.
  • Hyacinths only flower once, so if they have finished for the season they can be divided any time once flowering has finished.
  • Feed the bulbs with a specialty bulb food, such as Tui Bulb Food mixed into the soil when replanting.
  • Alternatively, the bulbs can be dug up, allow the foliage to die off naturally and store in a cool dry place over summer for replanting in autumn.
