When is a good time to prune my peach tree?

  Auckland
  April

Q.

Hi, can you tell me when is a good time to prune my peach tree? Thanks.

BEVERLEY JANICE TING

A.

Hi Beverley, the best time to prune peach trees is in late summer once they have finished fruiting. It can still be done in autumn/winter, make sure all cuts are sealed using pruning paste or a water based paint to prevent disease entering the wound. Reduce vigorous growth by a third, and weaker growth by two thirds. Remove branches that are crisscrossing over, dead wood needs to be removed and open up the tree to a vase shape to allow maximum sun in to ripen fruit in summer. Prune on a dry day, to an outward facing bud using sharp tools and a sloping cut so water runs off the cut. The Tui Team.
