When is the best time to plant garlic?

  Wellington
  April

Q.

Hi, I live on the Kapiti Coast, reading in our local paper gardening hints they say we can plant garlic now, is it too early or ok to proceed? I have prepared the bed with your vege mix so the soil will be ok.

Hi Rod, rule of thumb is to plant garlic on the shortest day in winter (June 21st) and harvest on the longest day in summer (December 21st). If planted too early the growth will be soft and tender going into winter and won’t have time to harden off, if planted too late the bulbs won’t have enough time to mature.
