Blueberries can be pruned in winter (July – August) when plants are dormant and before new growth emerges. In summer cut back any vigorous long shoots (water shoots) by about one third to an outside bud, this will encourage new growth.
Prune out weak spindly or dead growth, and criss-crossing branches. Remove older woody growth to encourage new shoots which will come from the base of the plant.
Blueberries fruit on one year old wood so it is important to continually regenerate new growth. Prune just above an outward facing bud to open up the frame work of the tree so that the sun can reach ripening fruit.
