When should I plant pumpkin and squash seeds?

  Northland
  September

Q.

Hi, when should I plant the pumpkin and squash seeds I collected?

Gill Sykes

A.

Hi Gill

Germinate your pumpkin seeds in late winter or early spring, after the frosts have finished as seedlings and young plants are frost tender (so now is a great time!). You can expect seedlings to appear after about 7-10 days, choose a sunny position for your pumpkins and plant in soil with plenty of Tui Compost and Tui Sheep Pellets.

Thanks, Tui Team

  • After watching a huge pumkin grow by its self only to find it was a tastless Giant when picked. Plantbarn told me it was because of the seeds coming wild from the compost!! So its buy plants next year!!
