Why are my autumn crop of strawberries deformed?

  Waikato
  February

Q.

Hi Tui, my strawberries have fruited well and continue to do so. However most of these latest ones have hard raised "bumps" rather than the usual smooth things that look like seeds on the outside of strawberries.

Hi Catherine, this is likely to be caused by poor pollination or incomplete pollination which is typical in spring and autumn when temperatures are cooler. Another reason is lack of nutrients, possibly boron which is a micronutrient that is required in the minutest amount. Apply a specially blended strawberry fertiliser such as Tui Strawberry food which contains micronutrients to help correct nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Strawberries are gross feeders and during the growing season require regular feeding to encourage flowering and fruiting. The Tui Team.
