Why are my tomato stems so thin?

  Otago
  November

Q.

Hi Tui, I seem to have a problem with my tomatoes. They are gaining height and have flowers but the main stems don't seem to be keeping up. They're not thickening up and they look to thin to be able to support the plant as it grows.

Hi John

This could be a varietal thing depending on what variety you are growing. Remember to remove the laterals from the plant – these are the side shoots that grow out from the main stem. Then the plants energy will go into producing fruit and should thicken up the main stem.

Is the tomato in a sunny position? Not enough sun can cause growth to be spindly. Regularly feed the tomato every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to ensure healthy growth and more flowering and fruiting.

Thanks, Tui Team.
