Why is my silverbeet not growing?

  Northland
  May

Q.

I planted silverbeet plants (unknown mixture) early March and they haven't grown. Early May I planted ironman silverbeet and they also are not growing. They are not dying just appear to be dormant. Any ideas?

Hi Irene, are they getting enough water or are they being overwatered? Silverbeet are easy to establish from seed, if the seed is fresh.

Seed is usually viable for approximately two years, after that the germination is greatly reduced. Packet seed is hermetically sealed, it keeps moisture and air out of the pack until it is opened and keeps the seed fresh. If the packet is opened the viability of the seed is reduced. Suggest starting the seed off inside using Tui Seed Raising Mix in small pots and then planting out.
