Are Hybrid Tea roses suitable for large pots?

Q.

Hi, can I successfully grow hybrid tea roses in large pots? Thanks.

Mervyn Smith

A.

Hi Mervyn, Hybrid Tea roses are better grown in the open ground to get the best out of them as they have a long root system, they can be grown in large pots for a short period of time, or if for a longer period, will need to be regularly repotted into fresh potting mix. Any pot with good drainage holes and larger than 50cm deep and wide is suitable. Make sure you use a quality potting mix, Tui Pot Power potting mix is the best to use as it is free draining, contains a wetting agent and water crystals to maintain soil moisture through dry spells, and a blend of controlled release fertilisers for sustained feeding. Make sure roses planted in pots are regularly watered and not allowed to dry out for long periods otherwise pests and diseases will become a problem. Supplementary feed your roses throughout the growing season with a liquid fertiliser such as Tui Seaweed & Fish. The best roses to grow in containers are bush roses or floribunda roses, especially as they repeat flower. Dead head Hybrid Tea roses for repeat flowering.
