Can I trim my basil plant back?

  Auckland
  August

Q.

Hi, my basil plant has grown tall with small leaves on top, can I cut it back and will it regrow? Thank you.

Sharon

Hi Sharon, yes, you can pinch the tips to encourage the plant to bush out, if you are wanting to trim it back further (than just the tips), only cut it back by approximately one third. The pieces you cut off can be placed in the freezer in a plastic bag until required, or you can mince in a blender with a little olive oil and freeze in ice block cubes. Basil plants are annual plants and usually die down at the end of the season when temperatures drop (in winter), you can keep the plant going by making sure it is in a warm situation and not over watered.
