Can I use Tui Bulb Food to fertilise my Hippeastrum in a pot?

  West Coast
  October

Q.

I have just bought Tui Bulb Food to fertilise my Hippeastrum (Amaryllis), however on the bag it says not suitable for pots and containers. The pack instruction says 1/3 of a cup per square meter, so how much do I add to a large pot?

A.

  • Best practice is to not use a blended fertiliser such as Tui Bulb food for plants in pots and containers.
  • The reason for this is that there is no control mechanism within blended fertilisers and so there is a greater risk of over fertilising, causing the roots to burn.
  • Soils act as a buffer and if fertiliser is over applied, it disperses out into the soil and washes out with watering.
  • When used in pots and containers the fertilisers, which are essentially 'salts', accumulate at the pot wall and as the concentration builds, it has the potential to burn plant roots.
  • Tui recommends a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Pots and Containers which is suitable for garden plants as well as pots and containers. Controlled release fertilisers release nutrients dependent upon temperature and moisture, if it is too hot or too cold, the fertiliser does not release.
  • Using a controlled release fertiliser reduces the chance of plant roots burning when growing in pots and containers.
  • Controlled release fertilisers feed plants for up to 6 months, so one application in a season is all that is needed.
  • Tui recommends liquid feeding throughout the growing season using Tui Superfood All Purpose liquid fertiliser for an abundance of flowers.
