Do decorative lime chips around citrus trees harm them?

Q.

Will decorative lime chips around citrus trees harm them?

Barbara Bennett

A.

  • There is a possibility that lime will leach out of the decorative chips and filter into the soil over time making the soil more alkaline and altering the soil pH. Citrus grow best in a slightly acid to neutral soil pH.
  • This could lock up other nutrients in the soil that the tree won't be able to access.
  • It is recommended not to use lime chip within 1-2 metres of the tree to keep the majority of the leaching away from the main feeder roots.
  • Apply an organic mulch such as Tui Mulch & Feed around the base of the tree.
