How can I plant on an area that used to be lawn?

Q.

We have a damp area at the corner of our section, previously unplanted but now in lawn, which is soggy to walk on. I'd like to plant a winter garden of shrubs with colour. Should the area be raised up or drained somehow first? It's about three metres square. Many thanks.

Hi Robyn, great question. Yes you need to improve your drainage first, as water logged soils never allow a lot of plants to thrive. Consider putting in a raised bed or installing some drainage. All the best, and don’t be tempted to plant anything until you can remedy the drainage problem. Happy gardening ^Tui Team
