How do I know if my worm tower is still working?

  Wellington

Q.

HI, I have a worm tower - how do I know if my worm tower is still working? I purchased a worm tower earlier this year and prepped it as per the instructions. We’ve been feeding our worms about once a week with organic food scraps and egg shells and normally when I open the lid there are worms at the top. The last couple of times I’ve opened the lid there are no worms and after moving some of the food scraps around there doesn’t look like there are worms in there. How do I know if they’re still there and that I haven’t somehow managed to kill my worms? Help!

Anupa Parmar

A.

Hi Anupa, I don't think you have killed your worms, they will be there, but during cold weather they will go deeper and slow down on their feeding, when temperatures warm up you should see the worms at the top of the worm farm again. From personal experience, I try not to add too many egg shells to the worm tower, make sure the egg shells are crushed up. Worms will migrate to the worm tower if there is food available. Every so often stir up the organic material in your worm tower to aerate it. Lianne.
