Q.
We have toadstools growing in our lawn, how do we get rid of this without killing the lawn?
Rob McKnight
A.
- The toadstools are there breaking down organic matter in the soil which is a good thing.
- They are harmless and will not cause any damage to the lawn.
- Apply lime to your lawn at a rate of 100g per square metre (approximately one handful or 1/4 of a cup).
- Lime will help breakdown the organic matter in the soil.
- The best time to apply lime is spring and autumn.
- The application of lime will stimulate growth and improve soil pH.
- Toadstools grow in damp conditions, consider reducing the watering.
- It could be a drainage issue, poorly drained soils or excessive rain and warm temperatures.
- It may be a sign that your lawn needs aerating and dethatching. Thatch is the organic layer that builds up between the soil and grass layer.
- Aerate the lawn in spring or autumn using spikes that can be attached to shoes available in garden centres or hardware stores.
