How do I treat toadstools in my lawn?

Q.

We have toadstools growing in our lawn, how do we get rid of this without killing the lawn?

Rob McKnight

A.

  • The toadstools are there breaking down organic matter in the soil which is a good thing.
  • They are harmless and will not cause any damage to the lawn.
  • Apply lime to your lawn at a rate of 100g per square metre (approximately one handful or 1/4 of a cup).
  • Lime will help breakdown the organic matter in the soil.
  • The best time to apply lime is spring and autumn.
  • The application of lime will stimulate growth and improve soil pH.
  • Toadstools grow in damp conditions, consider reducing the watering.
  • It could be a drainage issue, poorly drained soils or excessive rain and warm temperatures.
  • It may be a sign that your lawn needs aerating and dethatching. Thatch is the organic layer that builds up between the soil and grass layer.
  • Aerate the lawn in spring or autumn using spikes that can be attached to shoes available in garden centres or hardware stores.
