Q.
Hi, we have a few gardenias in our garden. They are all planted the same, however some have yellow leaves on them. I have bought the correct phosphate to put on the soil, but they are still going yellow. Can you please help me as I don’t want to lose them. Many thanks, Sharron.
A.
Gardenias are evergreen but still drop leaves. The yellowing is caused by a lack of magnesium. We suggest feeding with Tui Enrich Rose, Camellia, Azalea & Gardenia controlled release fertiliser in early spring and late summer, and applying Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic regularly.
Epsom salts will also help when there is a lack of magnesium.

How do I treat yellow leaves on my gardenias? Comments
My gardenias do the same at this time of year but a dose of Epsom salts and some coffee grounds bring them back to green leaves,

How much Epsom Salts did you use?
Faith van Heeswyck
Hi Faith, use 30g (approximately two tablespoons) per plant dissolved in 1 litre of water and applied to the soil around the plant. Lianne.
Hi Ann, that's great to hear. Thanks for sharing your experience and what has worked for your gardenias :) Enjoy! Tui Team.

Try checking them for scale and, if present, spraying them with neem oil.

Hi, Hiw do I prevent my feijoas being ruined with a small worm that gets inside? Thanks
Glenis Kissick
Hi Glenis, this sounds like guava moth. Guava moths can unfortunately be a problem with feijoas and at present no completely effective treatments exist. Guava moths lay their eggs on the fruit and the larva burrows into the fruit. It is very hard to treat once the plant is affected and is a big problem in warmer regions. Prevention is the best method of control. Cover the feijoa trees with fine netting immediately after flowering (when the petals have fallen) to protect the fruit. Secure with tape to the supporting branch. Remove fallen and rotting fruit, and dead leaves and mulch from under the tree as often the moths lay eggs in these areas. Guava moth pheromone delta traps with sticky bases are available from garden centres and rural suppliers. Thanks, Tui Team
