How do you sow magnolia seeds?

Q.

Hi, can you tell me how to sow magnolia seeds, thank you.

Denise

A.

Hi Denise, magnolia seed requires stratification to germinate, that is, a chilling period before sowing the seed. Remove the seeds from the pod when they are bright red. Soak overnight, remove the seeds from the water and lightly rub the outer layer of the seed on a sheet of sand paper. Wrap the seeds in wet sphagnum moss or damp newspaper, place into a plastic bag and into the fridge for at least three months, until late winter, early spring. This chilling period is very important to break dormancy in the seed, telling it that it is time to emerge. Fill a pot with potting mix or place them directly into the garden where they will get watered and kept moist, leave them undisturbed and hopefully they will germinate in spring. Lianne.
