My orange tree is dropping leaves, will it survive?

  Northland
  September

Q.

Hi Tui, I planted a young orange tree which has dropped most of its leaves (there's only 5 left) due to our cold September mornings. Will it survive?

Hi Rob

Yes, orange trees are prone to leaf drop if temperatures fluctuate. As it's a young tree the leaves falling could also be caused by transplant shock, especially if it has come from a nursery or a warmer temperature to a cooler temperature. Feed it weekly with Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic at a rate of 70ml per 9L watering can. This will help the plant if it is stressed. Once the tree picks up reduce it to fortnightly or monthly. Tui Seaweed and Fish Fertiliser is also good for oranges, it is rich in nitrogen and also has humates to stimulate soil microbes to improve soil health.

Thanks, Tui Team.
