Should dry Gladioli bulbs be soaked before planting?

  Hawkes Bay
  December

Q.

Should I soak dry Gladioli bulbs before planting and what is the benefit if I do?

Gary

A.

  • While not essential to the planting process, soaking gladioli (corms) bulbs before planting is beneficial and will rehydrate the bulb quicker, especially if it has dried out during storage over winter.
  • Soak gladioli bulbs for 12-24 hours before planting and add a few drops of Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic to the water to stimulate root growth.
  • Bulbs will be better able to absorb water and speed up growth by 7-10 days, rather than waiting for the bulb to absorb water from the soil.
  • It is okay not to soak gladioli corms, water well after planting and keep them moist, but not wet, in the first few weeks so bulbs absorb water from the soil.
