Should I lift my strawberry plants when they finish fruiting?

Q.

I read about planting new strawberry plants, but what about my existing ones. Should I lift them, dig in my strawberry mix, sheep pellets etc then replant along with my runners, or do I side dress existing plants.

A.

  • Clean up your established plants, remove all browned off and dead foliage, remove deformed fruit as it is unlikely to come to anything late in the season. If you were lucky, you may have had a late crop of berries in autumn.
  • The established plants don't need to be lifted; they can remain in the same bed.
  • Side dress the plants with Tui Sheep pellets once fruiting has finished and if you have Tui Strawberry mix left over or garden mix, place that around the plants to replenish the soil.
  • Remove any straw from around the plants as this will be a great hiding place for slugs, snails, earwigs and slaters. Replace the straw in spring.
  • Side dress with Tui Strawberry Food closer to spring when plants start flowering.
  • Runners can be removed and planted in autumn, dig in compost and sheep pellets into the soil before planting the runners.
  • Strawberry plants are usually good for 2-3 seasons and then should be replaced as each season they get smaller and produce less fruit.
  • By planting runners you are replenishing your plants to keep a continuous supply of berries each season.
