Hi Sally, if your avocado is newly planted and not well established you are probably best to remove the fruit for the first couple of seasons as the plants energies go into producing fruit rather than establishing a good root system. The reasons for fruit not setting could be due to incomplete pollination, avocados have male and female flowers that open at different times, they require compatible pollinators. It could also be due to a cold snap or late frost affecting the fruit or inconsistent watering or poor drainage due to heavy soils and too much water. Make sure your tree is in a sheltered position protected from winds and frosts, that the soils are well drained and the tree gets consistently watered throughout the growing season. Regular applications of Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic will be beneficial and help establish a good root system. Lianne.
