What do I need to do for my strawberry plants in winter?

Q.

I planted new strawberry plants last season and was wondering what maintenance I should be doing to them over winter?

A.

You don't have to do a lot to the plants in winter. Clear away dead foliage, remove any runners, these can be replanted for the coming season, spray plants with a copper based spray as a preventative for black spot. Remove any old straw mulch from around the plants as this is a good hiding place for slugs and snails, replace with fresh straw in spring.

Strawberries are better replanted each season as typically second season plants produce smaller and less fruit. Planting the runners is good succession plan for a new season's crop. If deformed fruit appear early in the season remove these as they have not been pollinated by bees and so will not develop into good fruit. Feed your strawberries with Tui Strawberry Food in another month or so when temperatures start to warm up.
