Q.
When I was checking my strawberry plants this morning, I saw a few plants with large brown spots on the leaves, this has happened overnight (we had rain last few days). They're in a raised bed with pea straw around them & have been watered.
A.
- Leaf spot is a common problem with strawberries, it is the same leaf spot that affects roses and is called Black Spot.
- Black spot is spread by water or rain splash from the soil and in most cases it does not affect the fruit, just the vigour of the plant.
- Remove the most badly affected leaves and discard them in the rubbish, not the compost to prevent Black Spot spreading.
- Spray plants with a copper based fungicide spray, this is a protectant that will stop Black Spot spreading to the new foliage, stop copper sprays once the plants are flowering.
- Improve air circulation around plants, most fungal problems thrive in damp moist conditions.
- Avoid overhead watering, try and water the base of the plant rather than the whole plant, water in the morning or afternoon so the water has time to dry out during the day and plants don't sit damp overnight.
