Hi Tui, I am planting our first Avocado trees (1 Haas & 1 Bacon) in a raised mound as we have clay soil 1 foot down. I understand they need free draining soil with volcanic sand. What Tui mix is best to use in my raised planting mound? I will put bark mulch on top of it once planted. We live in Onetangi on Waiheke Island. Thanks! Pip

Hi Pip, the best mix to use would be Tui Citrus and Fruit mix. Avocadoes are susceptible to root rot diseases and a free draining soil is important. If possible, dig deeper into the clay soil to try and break it up to improve drainage. Yearly applications of gypsum around your tree will help, also regular applications of Tui Seaweed + Fish. This is an organic seaweed based dynamic compost and fertiliser. It contains humates which stimulate the soil microbes and help break down clay soils, as well as stimulating root growth and a fertiliser. Regards, The Tui Team.
