Q.

What should I feed my Michelia gracipes?

Michele Prue

A.

Hi Michele, Michelia gracipes prefer slightly acid soil conditions similar to rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and magnolias. Feed with a fertiliser suitable for acid loving plants such as Tui Acid Food or Tui Enrich Rose, Camellia, Azalea and Gardenia controlled release fertiliser. Michelia gracipes is a frost hardy plant, but avoid fertilising late in autumn as this can push soft new growth which could potentially get damaged by frost in winter. It is always beneficial to mulch around the tree, autumn is a good time to do this before the ground temperature gets too cold, this will protect the roots in winter and adds organic matter back into the soil to help improve soil structure.
