When should I prune my gardenia?

  Auckland
  May

Q.

Hi, my gardenia, I think it is Professor Pucci, is growing a bit scraggly. Should I prune it back and when is the best time to do so?

Caroline

A.

Hi Caroline, you can prune it back anytime, after flowering is the ideal time to do this. Trim to a leaf node - where the leaf comes off the stem, as that is where the new growth will come from.

After flowering is also a good time to feed your plant as well. Use a fertiliser specially blended for acid loving plants such as gardenias – Tui Acid Food or Tui Enrich Rose, Camellia, Azalea & Gardenia are both good options.
