Q.

I am planting strawberries this season and was wondering which plants make good companions for strawberries?

A.

  • Borage flowers attract bees and other pollinators to the garden. Watch out though as borage self seeds and can take over the garden.
  • The herb sage improves flavour and helps to repel insect pests.
  • Lettuce and spinach are good ground covers the ground to suppress weeds and help conserve soil moisture.
  • Onions, garlic and chives help repel insect pests such as aphids.
  • Marigolds are all good companions for strawberries to help repel insects.

    • Garlic is a wonderful companion plant that deters aphids and greenfly. Plant in the vegetable garden and in and around roses. Check out the Tui Companion Planting Guide for more information.
