Why does my lemon tree only fruit every other year?

  Taranaki

Q.

Why does my lemon tree only fruit every other year. Is there anything I can do?

Johanna Jane

A.

Hi Johanna

Some fruit trees are biennial fruiting which means one season will be better than the other. There isn’t a lot that can be done to change this, it is mother nature. Keep your tree well fed with a specialty citrus fertiliser such as Tui Citrus Food in spring and again in late summer and water regularly. Mulch around the tree in summer to help conserve soil moisture, and try planting another tree and hope it fruits the alternate year.

Thanks, Tui Team
