Why does my Tahitian Lime only flower and fruit on one side?

  Bay of Plenty
  June

Q.

Hi, why does my Tahitian lime only produce fruit on one side? The tree has many thorns on its branches, has been in the ground for 4-5 years and looks very green and healthy. Should I consider cutting it out and replacing it with another variety? Thanks

A.

Hi Mary-Jean, are the flowers on the side that is facing the sun? East or North? Heat initiates flowering in citrus, limes need heat to flower, more so than lemons, oranges or mandarins.  It isn’t the tree that is the problem, but probably its situation. If you cut it out and replant a lime tree in the same spot, it is likely to continue flowering and fruiting on one side. Are you able to give it more sun, or shift it to another sunnier position?
