A lush green lawn doesn’t happen by chance. It takes time and dedication with regular mowing, fertilising and watering at least 2-3 times a week. This will keep the lawn actively growing and naturally crowd out invading weeds.
- The best time to water lawns is early morning or late afternoon, avoid watering at night as the grass stays wet and gives rise to fungal disease.
- Deep waterings are better than light sprinkles of water, to encourage roots to penetrate.
- A well strong well established root system gives a lawn resilience, reducing the effects of adverse seasonal weather.
- Correct mowing and feeding, and smart watering will keep your lawn green and resilient year-round.
Water deeply, not often
Deep watering encourages deep root penetration, while light, infrequent watering encourages shallow roots that aren't able to withstand drought or adverse weather.
- Aim to soak the soil to 100-150mm depth per watering, 2-3 times a week.
- Depending upon soil and sprinkler type, it may take 20-30 minutes.
- Total water required per week is 300 – 400mm.
- Adjust watering according to the weather.
Water at the right time
- Early morning is best, less evaporation and disease risk. Evening watering can increase fungal problems if grass stays wet overnight.
- Avoid watering in the heat of the day.
Adjust watering for the seasons
- Spring: Water as needed during dry spells
- Summer: Increase frequency, especially during hot or windy weather
- Autumn: Reduce watering as temperatures cool
- Winter: Usually, no watering required unless conditions are unusually dry
Signs your lawn needs water
- Grass turns dull green or bluish.
- Footprints remain visible after walking across it and the grass feels ‘crunchy’.
- Growth slows and leaf tips begin to curl, dry patches form.
- Unwanted weeds invade.
- If these signs appear, it’s time for a deep water.

Try the 'tuna tin test'
- Place an empty tuna tin or similar flat bottomed container on the lawn under the sprinkler. If you want to check the sprinkler’s coverage, place several containers in different areas of the lawn.
- Run the sprinkler for 10-15 minutes, or until the container collects 150mm of water.
- Use a ruler to measure the depth of the water in your container - 150mm is a good, deep watering.
