Correct mowing encourages dense growth that naturally crowds out weeds. Combine the right mowing height with regular watering and balanced feeding, and your lawn will stay greener, stronger, and healthier all year round.

Mow regularly
- Spring and early summer: mow weekly.
- Slower growth periods: every 10–14 days.
- In dry or hot weather, raise the mower height to reduce lawn heat stress.
Mow at the right height
- Avoid mowing too short, as this weakens the lawn and allows weeds and moss to establish.
- Never remove more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
- Slightly longer grass shades soil, conserves soil moisture, and protects roots.
Mow when conditions are right
- Mow when the grass is dry.
- Best times are mid-morning or early evening.
- Avoid mowing during frosts or extreme heat.
CHANGE MOWING DIRECTION
Alternating mowing direction helps:
- Prevent soil compaction.
- Encourage upright growth.
- Reduces wear and wheel tracks.
Seasonal Mowing in NZ
Spring Gradually lower the mower height as growth increases to around 5cm. Regular mowing results in a thick, healthy lawn.
Summer Raise the mower to the highest setting during hot or dry spells. A longer lawn copes better with heat and drought.
Autumn Continue mowing while the lawn is growing. Leaving grass slightly longer going into winter helps protect roots.
Winter Mow only when needed. Lower mowing height slightly. Avoid mowing frosty or waterlogged lawns and keep blades sharp.
