Can blueberries be planted in a mix with dolomite lime?

  Bay of Plenty
  August

Q.

Hi Tui, I have been told that blueberries should not be planted in a mix that has dolomite lime in it. I see that I can plant blueberries in Tui Strawberry Mix, but it has dolomite lime in it. Can you please explain?

Linda

A.

Hi Linda

Blueberries like acid soil conditions around pH 4.5 to 5.5. Applying lime neutralises the soil to a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 which is the optimum pH to grow most plants. Tui Strawberry Mix is in the low end of this range for pH (5.5-6.5). The mix contains peat which has acid soil properties so the dolomite lime brings the mix back to the correct range. We have just launched another mix that will be just as suitable for planting blueberries, which is Tui Citrus & Fruit Mix, it is suitable for all fruiting trees including Blueberries.

Thanks, Tui Team
