Can I sow grass seed on top of moss in lawns?

Q.

Can I sow grass seed on top of moss in lawns?

Belinda Selby

A.

  • Best practise is to remove the moss first, as this will impede the growth of lawn seed.
  • Use a moss control product to remove it or Tui Lawn Fertiliser which contains Sulphate of Iron for moss  control. Alternatively, it can be raked out.
  • The presence of moss is usually a drainage or light issue. The Moss will return if the reason for it being there is not remedied, either improve drainage, or increase the light on that particular area of the lawn, which could be caused by overhanging trees, or it may be the south side of the house which is a bit harder to remedy.
  • Resow the area with a seed variant suited to low light areas such as Tui Superstrike Shady Places.
  • Prepare the soil well before sowing any seed. Apply a layer of Tui Lawn Preparation mix to the area before seed sowing.
