Q.
My lilies were grown from seed by my late father-in-law, they have flourished for 20 years. I want to share them with family, when and how should I do this?
A.
Lilies are best lifted, divided, repotted or planted as quickly as possible as they do not have a 'skin' and so do not store very well.
- Lift lilies once they have finished flowering and the foliage has died down, this will be around April or May, in late autumn.
- Use a garden fork to carefully lift the bulbs out of the soil, gently tease the bulbs apart.
- Replant in a sunny spot in free draining soil that has been enriched with Tui Compost. Mix into the soil before planting.
- In spring when the bulbs start to grow side dress with Tui Bulb Food.
- If planting in pots use a quality bulb mix such as Tui Bulb Mix.
- Apply a controlled release fertiliser to lilies in pots, use Tui Enrich Pots & Containers controlled release fertiliser. Apply in spring and again once flowering has finished.
- If needing to store lilies for a short period, place in a plastic bag filled with sphagnum moss, plant as soon as possible.
