Q.

How much food would the Tui Worm tower take per week (in kg)?

Sue Bramley

A.

Hi Sue, it is hard to say in kilograms how much food to place in the worm tower, it will depend on the density of the food you are putting into the worm tower. The tower will take more food scraps at the start because it is empty and when it starts to fill up, it will take less. Chop the food into smaller pieces and place into the tower, as full as you like, as long as the lid can be replaced securely. Leave the tower for a couple of days for the worms to do their work, check to see how quickly they have broken down the food the food before placing more food in the tower. I have two, one breaks down quickly, the other is much slower. The Tui Team.

  • I have 4 containers full of worms. I feed them about 1 - 2 kg of food per week each, consisting of kitchen food scraps (nothing cooked and nothing sour), finely ground egg shells (up to two doz eggs) coffee grounds, shredded cardboard as well as cow manure (well matured). Mix it well and make sure its very moist. Leave everything for 24 hours and add to containers. Worms love it!

    • Hi Briand, who would believe worms could eat so much! You obviously have the right formula, and they will be giving you nutrient rich worm castings for your garden. What a bonus.
