Q.
Does leaving grass cuttings on lawns promote growth? Is it a good or bad idea?
Rex Brady
A.
- If you infrequently cut lawns and leave them to get long before mowing and not catch the clippings, it will smother the grass and cause it to yellow, rot and create fungal disease problems.
- If you regularly mow your lawn and cut it on a high setting only removing the top third of the lawn, then you can leave the clippings on the lawn after mowing.
- If you aren't bothered about the aesthetics of the lawn then it can be mowed without a catcher.
- There are advantages to leaving clippings on your lawn as it helps add organic matter and nutrients back into the soil and improves soil structure.
