Q.
My feijoas have finished fruiting for the season. Is there anything I need to do now to make sure they are healthy for next season? Do they need a prune?

Hi Fran, this is a great question.
A light prune after fruit is harvested will encourage new growth and increase yields the following year. If you live in a frost prone area, wait to prune the tips in spring or summer, avoiding fruiting branches.
- Thinning the plant also makes it easier to harvest and allows bird pollination, wind movement and sunlight in for fruit ripening.
- You don't need to feed over winter, however apply Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic at least once a month to keep your trees healthy and more resilient to frost, pests and diseases. Feed with Tui NovaTec Premium fertiliser once spring arrives and the tree is actively growing.
- Regularly mulch trees with Tui Mulch & Feed to protect against temperature extremes, keep roots moist, and suppress weeds.
- Support new trees with double bamboo or pine stakes, tied with soft ties to give upright support.
