Q.
Do you have a citrus food that is recommended for potted citrus? The bag of Citrus Food we bought says not recommended for plants growing in pots and containers.

A.
- The recommendation to not use blended fertilisers on plants in pots and containers is “best practice”.
- Essentially fertilisers are salts which can potentially burn plant roots when over-applied.
- Tui Citrus Food is a blend of straight fertilisers with no control mechanism, the nutrients release all at once and are taken up by the plant and excess is washed out of the soil through leaching.
- When a fertiliser is over-applied to plants planted in the garden, the soil acts as a buffer and the fertiliser disperses out into the soil.
- In pots and containers, the concentration of fertiliser hits the pot wall causing plant roots to burn.
- Tui recommends Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus, Tree & Shrub fertiliser for plants in pots and containers.
- This is a controlled release fertiliser; the release of nutrients is dependent upon temperature and moisture. Too hot over 30 degrees C it stops releasing nutrients so there is no build-up of salts, too cold and it won't release.
- Tui Citrus Food is recommended for garden use only.
