Why has my lemon tree dropped its leaves?

  Otago
  October

Q.

My lemon tree has dropped its leaves, there are more branches than leaves. Is there a solution please.

A.

  • Your lemon tree has dropped its leaves because of stress, this is how plants save themselves when they are under stress. There could be several reasons for this happening.
  • Temperature fluctuations, intense heat, too cold, or frost. Citrus are a sub tropical fruit tree and once established can withstand some frost.
  • Over watering or under watering are also possible causes, adjust watering to the weather conditions, especially if planted in a pot.
  • For established citrus trees in the garden water weekly in the growing season; for newly planted trees water every 2-3 days; for citrus in pots especially in summer watering may need to be daily.
  • Over feeding or under feeding. If too much fertiliser is applied it can burn the roots and plants will drop their leaves. If the tree needs fertilising it may also drop its leaves.
  • Feed citrus with the correct fertiliser. For garden plants use Tui Citrus Food and for plants in pots and containers us Tui Enrich Citrus & Fruit controlled release fertiliser.
  • If it is in a pot and needs repotting into a bigger pot, it can drop its leaves.
  • They are best plnated in a sheltered position in well-drained soil.Poorly drained soil can lead to root rot disorders.
  • To further reduce stress to the tree remove any fruit as the plants energies will go into the fruit rather than recovery.
  • To help the tree recover apply Tui Seaweed Plant Tonic every week at a rate of 70-100ml per 9L watering can until the tree recovers. Seaweed stimulates new root growth and healthy leaf growth.
